On December 28, 1928, Helner Mae, or Mary Hellen graced the world with her presence at 11 a.m. in Hesterville, MS.

She was born the 5th child of I. B. and Ethel Henderson. She grew up with her siblings Evoular, Donna B., Mabel, Dennis, Francis, Thelma, Callie Sue, Lula Isaac, Ezekiel, Willie Ray, and Jewel on her parent's farm raising cotton, corn, potatoes, peanuts, and sugar cane while attending the Hesterville School outside of Kosciusko, MS.

"Segregation made her education even more meaningful and she sought refuge from life's challenges by playing sports including basketball and baseball throughout her teenage years.

Mary Hellen was a teenager when World War II started and at the request of her cousin Nora, she wrote letters to encourage the soldiers. One young soldier she wrote was Angus Stewart. The two continued their correspondence throughout the war and by its end Mary Hellen was excited for Angus' return. The two courted for a year and married on April 13, 1946. The happy couple made a home together in Sallis, MS; raising seven children, MacArthur, Ethel Mae, Angus Jr., Joe Lee, Lillie Mae, Annie Belle, and Mary Ann; and one grandchild, Tomiko.

Mary Hellen and Angus lived together happily raising their family and sending their children off into the world until Angus' passing in 1986.

Throughout her life, Mary Hellen proved to be a truly enterprising woman as she juggled being a wonderful wife and a great mother by helping to run the family farm and serving her community. Despite the demands from her family, she was known in the community as someone who would always lend a helping hand. She also served in several capacities in the family church New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church located in Sallis, MS.

Before her 80th birthday, Mary Hellen was asked to reflect upon her proudest moments. She remembered how she and her siblings were brought up in hard times and through struggle went on to become strong individuals. She recalled those times when she and her siblings were passed on the road by the bus that carried the white children to school and how she didn't let that break her stride. Throughout her life, she continuously thanked the Lord that she made it through those tough times. In her words "We've come a long way and this younger generation will see different things happen than we saw, but I'm proud that they did make it better for us as we made it better for them." Mary Hellen Stewart not only has her individual accomplishments, but also the accomplishments of her grandchildren, and great-grandchildren to claim as her own.

Her legacy continues to live on through all of them. Mary Hellen leaves to continue her legacy, seven children; Mack Arthur (Edna), Ethel Mae, Angus Jr., (Dorothy), Joe Lee (Belvayuna), Lillie Mae, Annie Belle (David), and Mary Ann; sixteen grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren. In addition to her decedents, Mary Hellen leaves to mourn her two sisters, Evoular and Francis; two brothers, Ezekial and Willie; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
