"Susan's story was not complete without including her husband, Frank Cuddy. Frank was also in the US Navy and a code breaker. He spoke Japanese fluently. He was very much in love with Susan and willing to go against the ban on interracial marriages at the time in Virginia and Maryland. In 1947 Frank and Susan could not get married in a church in any state near where they worked for the National Security Agency and Naval Intelligence. They had to go to the Navy Chapel in Washington DC where there was no law banning their marriage. They bought a house in Virginia and lived their lives ignoring the racist rules. During WWII Cuddy was a communications specialist in the Pacific Theater. He worked with HYPO in Hawaii. He was a talented cryptographer and part of the LCDR Joe Rochefort group responsible for the Battle of Midway victory and shooting down Yamamoto's plane over the Solomon Islands. He was stationed in Yokosuka in the 1950's. He worked with the National Security Agency. Frank served in the Navy for 23 years and achieved the rank of Chief Petty Officer. Susan and Frank never had any problems talking about their work because they were in the same business with the same high security clearance."
