Mr Mead was born Oct. 5, 1922 in Sterling to the late Rollin and Essie Smith Mead. He was a 1941 graduated of Sterling H.S. and attended Sterling College until Pearl Harbor in 1941. He was a Navy veteran, serving in WW II at Hutchinson Naval Air Station and later in Hawaii. He worked as a corporate pilot, and managed Lyons/Rice County Airport for 6 years. He was a licensed flight instructor and aircraft A & P mechanic. He founded Mead Engine and Welding Works, R & M Supply Co. and Mead Repair Service and was vice president of Sterling Drilling Co. He was member of United Methodist Church, Sterling Rotary Club, American Legion, VFW, OX5 Club and past Sterling School board member.
Survivors: sons, James, Sterling, Ronald, Lowell, AR, Steven, Wichita, Kevin, Inman; daughters, Carol Scott, Ellicott City, MD, Michelle Phymer, Oklahoma City, Valerie Mead, Memphis, TN; brother, Richard, Peabody; sister Betty Taylor, Sterling; 7 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren.
