Sidney A Souther was one of Prairie County's early settlers, having homesteaded in the Mildred MT area in October of 1908. He came to Montana with his parents, Calvin and Jemima Souther. When Prairie County was created in 1915, he was elected the first county treasurer. In 1916, he married Mabel Williams, Prairie's first county superintendent, in Fallon at the Williams home. She passed away October 23, 1974.
Mr Souther was a 50 year member of Terry Masonic Lodge # 74; and both he and his wife were members, first of the Terry Community Presbyterian church and, Later, the Glendale Presbyterian church. In the years that followed, hail, drought and grasshoppers forced many people to leave the county, the Souther family moving to Chicago in 1921 and later, in 1930 to Glendale California with their three daughters. In both Chicago and Glendale, Mr Souther was in the flooring contracting business. He retired in 1949. Sid Souther passed away May 25, 1975.
Two of Souther's daughters, Margaret Deppe and Janet Brown were born in Terry, the third, Claire Caylor, was born in Chicago where they lived for several years after leaving here,and before moving to Glendale.
Survivors include the three daughters, 12 grandchildren, five grandchildren; a a brother Harold; a brother-in-law, Warren, and a sister-in-law, Janet Williams of Terry.
