The second son of Orval E. and Alice M. (Grafmiller) Bowman, De Forrest moved with his family from Lafayette to Indianapolis as his father's position with the railroad changed. He married Marilois Meek on June 13, 1936 in Indianapolis.

The father of a son and a daughter, Mr. Bowman was employed as an insurance agent and affiliated with the Presbyterian church.
