He was born April 16, 1931, in Edwards County, Illinois, the son of the late Wilbur W. and Sylvia (Orel) Barnhart. He married Mary Delores "Dee" Dutton on August 8, 1952, in West Salem, Illinois, and she survives.
Frank was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and served during the Korean War. He joined the Illinois State Police on January 31, 1960 and retired as a Master Sargeant with District 50, Air Operations Division after a career of over twenty five years on December 31, 1985.
He was a member of the West Salem United Methodist Church, a member of Kansas Lodge #280 Ancient Free & Accepted Masons, the Danville Consistory, Ansar Shrine Temple, member and past president of the Edgar County Shrine Club, Illinois State Police Benevolent Group for Dedicated Service to the Citizens of the State of Illinois, and American Legion Post #211.
He was an avid pilot and enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing, boating, camping, and spending his winters in Fort Myers Beach, Florida. He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Other survivors include a son, Stephen C. (Mary) Barnhart of Warrensburg, Missouri; two daughters, Brenda G. Grimes of Paris, Illinois, and Pam H. (Tom) Shaffer of Kansas, Illinois; a brother, Gilbert W. (Brenda Lou) Barnhart of West Salem, Illinois; eight grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Leroy Barnhart, and a great grandson Aiden Ashley.
For those who wish, the family suggests that memorials be made to the Edgar County Shrine Club or the Kansas Christian Church Building Fund.
