ESTHER J. RAYNES
Esther J. Raynes, wife of Joseph Raynes, died at her home on Elm street Monday morning after a short illness. Mrs. Raynes was born in North Yarmouth March 25, 1847, and her parents were William and Esther Ann Johnson. She spent her girlhood and atttended schools in her native town. On March 7, 1867, when she was in her twentieth year, she was married to Joseph Raynes of this town. The ceremony was performed at the Congregational parsonage by Dr. Abbott. Mrs. and Mrs. Raynes Homestead near Yarmouth Junction until it was destroyed by fire October 3, 1897. They spent the following year with Mr. Raynes's brother, Edward Raynes, during which time their new home on Elm street was being built. In 1899 they moved into the new house where they have lived ever since. Mrs. Raynes, although not active in the social life of the town, was always interested in the affairs of the community. She spent very much of her life in her home and was always a devoted wife and mother and a valued neighbor. Mrs. Raynes possessed a very unselfish disposition, continually doing for others. She was a Past President of W. L. Haskell Relief Corps and was especially interested in the future erection of a soldiers monument by the town. Through her own efforts she sayed a large sum of money which she intended contributing toward that end. The deceased leaves besides her husband, two sons, Albert Joseph of Portland and George Edward of Yarmouth, and three sisters, Mrs. Reuben Hodsdon, Miss. Elizabeth Hodsdon and Mrs. Agenette Young, all of North Yarmouth. She also leaves three grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the late residence.
