Richard Souter, 69, of Amarillo, formerly of Hereford, died Thursday, April 8, 2004.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in First Baptist Church in Hereford with the Rev. Terry Cosby and the Rev. Harold Harrison officiating. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Levelland City Cemetery in Levelland by Parkside Chapel Funeral Home of Hereford.

Mr. Souter was born March 23, 1935, in Wild Horse, Okla., the son of Martel and Kathryn Souter. He graduated from Eastern New Mexico State University with a bachelor's degree in education and received his master's degree in administration from Texas Tech University. Mr. Souter had been the school superintendent for several school districts for more than 30 years.

He was a veteran, having served in the Army during the Korean conflict. Mr. Souter was a former member of Hereford Rotary Club, a city councilman in Mosquero, N.M., a life member of Texas State Teachers Association and a deacon of First Baptist Church in Hereford. He married Terri Carter July 13, 1989, in Canyon.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Brian Laing of Amarillo; four daughters, Shana Granger of Iraan, Dana Pannell of Plainview, Laynie Johnson of Rowlett and Jill Rains of Hereford; a sister, Saleta Duff of Levelland; a niece, Saleta Ann Thomas of Crowley; and six grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials be to M.D. Anderson Hospital in Houston.
