Alfred William Bloom, 88, formerly of Clearfield, died Friday, Feb. 24, 2012, in Ligonier. He was born April 27, 1923, in New Millport, a son of the late Adlai and Margaretta (Boag) Bloom. Prior to his retirement in 1985, he was an assistant treasurer with the Clearfield Bank and Trust Co. He was a member of the West Side United Methodist Church and served as a volunteer with the AARP tax aid program. Al is survived by his wife of 50 years, Shirley; a son, Brian and his wife, Elizabeth, of Ligonier; three grandchildren, Brianne, Alec and Helene; a brother, Adlai and his wife, Alice, of LaValle, Md.; and a sister-in-law, Marilyn Price and her husband, Edward, of Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, John and his wife, Veralda, of Chesterton, Ind.; and a brother-in-law, Robert Williams and his wife, Cecilia, of Clearfield. He graduated from Clearfield Area High School in 1941, and was a veteran of the Army, having served in World War II in the 8th Corps Field Artillery. Al served 17 months in the European Theater and participated in the Normandy, Central France, Belgium, Ardennes and Rhine Crossing campaigns. Family and friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the SNYDER FUNERAL HOME INC., 402 E. Church St., Ligonier. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the chapel of the funeral home with the Rev. John E. Flower Jr. officiating. Interment will be in Crown Crest Memorial Park, Clearfield. Memorial contributions may be made to West Side United Methodist Church, 317 Nichols St., Clearfield, PA 16830, or a charity of one's choice.
