Johann Sokolis was born in Jeschonowitz, Kreis Ortelsburg, East Prussia. He was a son of Adam Sokolis and Louise Bachor, and he had a twin brother, Gottlieb. Johann married 9 January 1894 in East Prussia to Eva Bachor, and they had eleven children: Augusta Louise, Fredrich Wilhelm, Hedwig Wilhelmina, Johann, Charles Carl, Heinrich, Albert, Emil, Ernest Paul, Martha Marie Eva, and Edward Otto.

By 1894, the family had emigrated from East Prussia to Schonnebeck, Germany where their first child, Augusta, was born. On August 31, 1901, Johann and Eva left Germany with four children in the company of Eva's brother, Fritz Bachor, and a cousin, Wilhelm Fedora. They sailed from Antwerp, Belgium onboard the S.S. Kensington and arrived at Ellis Island, NY on September 11, 1901. Fritz Bachor was listed as an American citizen who was returning home to Springfield, IL. All three men listed their occupation as coal miner and all listed their destination as Springfield, IL.

Johann briefly attempted to homestead in Alberta, Canada where Eva's parents and brothers had settled, but he thought the conditions were too harsh and returned to Springfield, IL. There he worked as a coal miner and a minister to a small group of Evangelical Lutherans.
