He was born and raised in Iowa and lived in Nebraska and South Dakota. He joined the Army Air Corps during WWII.

S/Sgt Charles Altemus was a Waist Gunner assigned to crew on a B-24 bomber. In England they were part of the 577th Squadron, 392nd Bomb Group, 8th Air Force, Army Air Corps and flew 12 successful bombing missions including the D-Day Invasion. On June 23, 1944, (their 13th mission), Mission #121, field order #364, flying Lead Plane ( With extra men in the crew),"the aircraft took a direct hit by flak in #3 engine and bomb bay, at the target. The plane immediately went into a dive, then pulled up slightly, rolled over and went out of control. They were shot down over enemy occupied, Laon, France. (5) chutes were seen." 2 of 24 planes were lost. Altemus and Waist Gunner Lampe stopped to help Tail Gunner Tremplett get out. Altemus and Lampe both made a safe jump but were captured by Germans on the ground. Tremplett died in the plane. MISSING AIRCREW REPORT: #06215 AIRCRAFT: #42-95027 (NO NICKNAME) "B-PIus"
