A best-selling author of self-help books who fought for the medicinal use of marijuana. He died of AIDS and AIDS-related non-Hodgkin's lymphoma after being denied the use of cannabis to treat the side effects of these conditions.

Mr. McWilliams was the author of over 40 books -- several of them NEW YORK TIMES bestsellers. His works include the LIFE 101 series, THE PERSONAL COMPUTER BOOK, HOW TO SURVIVE THE LOSS OF A LOVE, and many others.

Two especially controversial works by McWilliams were AIN'T NOBODY'S BUSINESS IF YOU DO: THE ABSURDITY OF CONSENSUAL CRIMES IN A FREE SOCIETY; and LIFE 102: WHAT TO DO WHEN YOUR GURU SUES YOU. The former made a powerful case for the abolition of "victimless crimes" laws, and spurred his involvement in the medical-marijuana cause. The latter title is the account of his relationship with cult leader John-Roger Hinkins, which contained immense amounts of damaging information about Hinkins and his MSIA group, and eventually was pulled from the market after a lawsuit.

Peter McWilliams was also a published poet, and a recovering clinical depressive who promoted the use of antidepressant treatments and therapies in HOW TO HEAL DEPRESSION.
