Obituary: Walter Eugene Engeman, Sr.
Walter Eugene Engeman, Sr., 86, Atchison, died Oct. 6, 2001, at Heartland East Hospital in St. Joseph, Mo. Funeral services will be at 1:30 P.M. Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001, in the chapel of the Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 P.M. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Mr. Engeman was born Aug. 30, 1915, the son of Fred and Allie Burright Engeman. On Dec. 28, 1938, he and Elsie Hopple Engeman were married. She preceded him in death on February. 17, 2000.
Mr. Engeman was a veteran of the Army, having served during World War II. He was a Baptist by faith.
Mr. Engeman was employed as a cab driver in Atchison before becoming the owner-operator of the Hiawatha Tavern, where he retired in 1987. Mr. Engeman was a member of the Atchison Elks Lodge and the Flemming-Jackson-Seever American Legion Post No. 6 in Atchison.
Along with spending time with family and friends, Mr. Engeman enjoyed being a spectator of all sports.
Mr. Engeman was also preceded in death by four brothers, Charles, Clarence, Everett and Jospeh Engeman; four sisters, Ruth Kirkland, Nora Weber, Opal Henry and Grace Reichle; and stillborn twin brothers, Roy and Ray.
Survivors include two sons, Walter E. Engeman Jr., Rushville, Mo., and Phillip E. Engeman, Fullerton, Calif.; one daughter, Mary Jane Chilson, Topeka; 12 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
