Wendell Eugene Banks, 73, of Leighton, Ala., went home to be with his Lord on Feb. 9, 2008, after a long and debilitating illness. He died in the home that he and his wife, Jean, built, surrounded by his sons and their families, and having been visited during the past several months by many dear friends and family members.

He is survived by his loving wife, Jean Collins Banks; his son, Dr. Ron Eugene Banks and wife, Ronna, of Durham, N.C., and son, Rick Banks and wife, Connie, of Leighton, Ala. The rewards of his life include grandchildren, Courtney and Chad Goertz, of Denver, Colo., Andrew Banks, of Houston, Texas, and Brandy, Ashley and Lauren Banks, of Russellville, Ala. He is also survived by his beloved sister, Mary Hovater and her husband, Lewis, of Cullman, Ala., a brother, Charlie Banks and his wife, Frances, of Trinity, Ala., and sister, Marcie Banks, of Pontiac, Mich.; as well as many nieces, nephews and in-laws.

Master Sgt. Banks retired from the U.S. Air Force after serving a distinguished 24-year career in many states and numerous foreign countries. After answering his country's call, Wendell retired from the Air Force in 1973 and went to work building one of the greatest achievements of modern history, the Trans-Alaska Pipeline from Prudhoe, Alaska.

Eventually, he returned to Florence, Ala., where he worked in the city engineering department until 1996.

As a member of Leighton Baptist Church, Leighton, Ala., Wendell faithfully served as a teacher and deacon for as long as his mind and body allowed. He looked forward to each Sunday so that he could teach in Children's Worship, where he would tell them about Bible heroes and how much Jesus loved them. Living his faith, Mr. Banks went on mission trips to Romania and Moldova so that he could tell those children that Jesus loved them just as much.

We, his family, would like to thank members of Leighton Baptist Church, the third-floor staff at Shoals Hospital, Dr. Joshua Visac, the staff of nurses, and aides at Alacare for their care and concern for our father, husband and brother during these many months of his long illness. We offer a special note of heartfelt gratitude to Nicki Landers, who tirelessly and cheerfully served him and his family with care, concern and compassion.

A celebration of the life of Wendell Eugene Banks will be held at Leighton Baptist at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb, 11, 2008, followed by burial in Colbert Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be 6-9 p.m. Sunday, Feb, 10, 2008, at Colbert Memorial Chapel. The body will lie in state one hour before the service at his church.

Colbert Memorial Chapel of the Shoals is directng.
