John David Costello, 71, of Grants Pass died Monday, Sept. 23, 2002, at his home.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at First Christian Church, with the Rev. Wes Winn officiating. Private committal will be at Hawthorne Memorial Gardens. Chapel of the Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Costello was born Dec. 13, 1930, in Brainerd, Minn. He lived in Minnesota until he was 14 years old, when he moved to Klamath Falls. From 1947 to 1950, he served in the U.S. Army with the Military Police Battalion. On June 26, 1970, in Alameda, Calif., he married Marjorie E. Shull, who survives. They moved to Grants Pass in 1984 from Oak Harbor, Wash. He was a fire chief, employed through civil service for 30 years. Prior to his retirement, he served 10 years at the Whidbey Island Naval Air Station in Washington.

He was a member of First Christian Church and assisted with the food bank. He built his retirement home in Grants Pass and enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, RV travel and woodworking.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters, Chrystyne Knight of Eureka, Calif., and Casey Garcia of San Diego; two sons, David Costello of Springfield and Daniel Costello of Chico, Calif.; a stepson, Ken Myers of Grants Pass; a stepdaughter, Linda Myers of Chico, Calif.; and 16 grandchildren.

A daughter, Connie Costello, died in 1985.
