Elisha P. Howe passes away
Was in book business and at one time professor in Onondaga Academy

Elisha Perley Howe, for many years engaged in the book business in this city, and a former teacher and professor of mathematics, died at 7:20 a.m. today at his home, 519 Cedar st., after a long illness.
Mr. Howe was born on July 29, 1837, in Otisco and had lived here about 30 years. He received his education in the common schools of his native place and in Homer academy, from which he was graduated. He was principal of the Union school at Homer for one year, for two years was professor of mathematics at Onondaga Academy and was principal of Union school at Marcellus for two years, also about 1850 was school commissioner for six years of the second district of Onondaga county. While in Marcellus he married Anna Machan, who survives, together with two daughters, Miss Grace M. and Miss Josephine A. Howe of this city, and two brothers, H.J. Howe, the jeweler, and B.J.C. Howe of Indianapolis, and two sisters, Mrs. William Tuttle of Manchester, Ia., and Mrs. E.W. King of Otisco.
Upon coming to this city he engaged in the book business with E.B. Knapp, under the firm name of Knapp & Howe. The partnership was discontinued after a number of years. Mr. Howe conducted the business himself, until about 15 years ago, when he retired from active business because of ill health. The store was first located in the Vanderbilt block in South Warren st. and later was conducted where the University block is now situated.
Mr. Howe was of strong opinions, was a Republican in politics and Episcopalian in faith. He had been vestryman in both St. James, now the Church of the Savior, and Grace churches. Of late years he had been connected with St. Paul's church.
In 1860 he was master of Morningstar lodge of Masons at Marcellus.
The funeral will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday at his late home. The Rev. Dr. H.R. Lockwood is to officiate. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.
