Johnnie J. Smelcer, 80, of Price Lane, died Monday at Takoma Adventist Hospital.

Mr. Smelcer was retired from MECO.

He was a member of Faith Gospel Mission, where he attended as long as his health permitted.

Those close to him knew Mr. Smelcer as a devoted and loving husband, father, and grandfather. They said he was known as "Papaw" to all who knew him and that he loved Jesus.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years: Lucy Kate Swatzell Smelcer; six daughters and five sons-in-law: Joyce and Rocy Lane, Patsy and Ed Cruey, Linnie and Jack Burns, Mary and Dale Seaton, Pearl Taylor, and Janie and Wayne Johnson, all of Greeneville; three sons and daughters-in-law: William and Barbara Smelcer of Midway, and Jimmy and Alice Smelcer and David and Pat Smelcer, all of Greeneville; 30 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

He was a son of the late John and Lola Wilkerson Smelcer and was preceded in death by a grandson.

The family will receive friends from 7-9 this evening and Thursday evening at Kiser Funeral Home.

The funeral service will be held at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon at Kiser Funeral Chapel with interment in New Bethel Cemetery. The Rev. Larrie R. Pike and the Rev. Claude Smith will officiate.

Active pallbearers will be Andrew Johnson, Phillip Johnson, Eddie Smelcer, Michael Cruey, Jonathan Smelcer, Michael Grindstaff, and Jerry Whittiker.

Honorary pallbearers will be Jackie Wright, Dr. William Hamilton, Bill Dearstone, Rex Russell, Dr. Elliott Smith, Michael Morelock, the staff on the third floor of Takoma Adventist Hospital, and Scott Wilkerson.
