Freight Conductor 40 Years, Brother of Former County School Head

MOTHER FLOOD VICTIM

Calvin William Watson Leech, for 40 years a freight conductor in the employ of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company, died at 10:30 o'clock last night at his home, 415 Locust Street, Conemaugh, aged 73, He had suffered for a long time of a complication of diseases incident to advanced age. He had been retired on the pension rolls of the company for a number of years. Familiarly known as "Cal," Mr. Leech enjoyed the acquaintance and friendship of thousands of persons, particularly employees of the Pittsburgh Division of the Pennsylvania Railroad. He as born at Apollo, a son of the late James and Elizabeth (Wilson) Leech, for many years residents of Johnstown. His death is the last among six children. The mother of Mr. Leech and one sister, Alice, were drowned in the Johnstown Flood. Other brothers and sisters who preceded "Cal" Leech in death were James W., John F., Isabel and Laponna P. Leech and Nancy, wife of Daniel DeWalt of Jeanette. James Wilson Leech, a brother, was at one time Cambria County Superintendent of schools, district attorney and Congressman from this district. Attorney Russell Leech, son of James W. Leech and nephew of Calvin Leech, was also elected to Congress and now holds a responsible Federal post as a member of the board of income tax appeals. Calvin Leech and the former Elizabeth Wissinger were united in marriage many years ago. her death occurred February 6, 1925. One son born to their union, Roy Leech of 415 Locust Street, Conemaugh, survives. Mr. Leech was a member of Mountain Lodge, No. 172, Order of Railroad Conductors, Altoona. Funeral services will be conducted at the Leech home at 2:30 p.m. Monday by Rev. W. T. McCandles, pastor of the Conemaugh Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in Headrick's Cemetery. Carl E. Davis, Conemaugh, is the mortician in charge.
