William Henry was the first child born to Wiley Maddix and Mary Hughes. By the time he was 9 years old he had 4 younger siblings and his father was deceased. Before his 14th birthday his mother remarried. He had 8 half-siblings as a result.

In the 1900 census all five children are listed, however, "Millie" is actually Wiley Mary Maddix.

On June 5, 1917, William registered for the draft. His date of birth is listed as Nov 30, 1891. He states that he is a natural born citizen, being born in Cleburne AL, and is 25 years of age. His occupation was boilermaker 13 and he is employed by Gulf States Steel Co., in Gadsden AL. He claims an exemption from the draft by stating that he is the support for his family of his wife and child.

The registrars physical description says that he is of medium height and build and that he has blue eyes and red hair. Blue eyes and red hair are both recessive genes and are shared liberally in the 5 children and successive grandchildren of Wiley and Mary.

At the time of his draft registration William states that he has never had any previous military service. He is unable to write and signs his form with an "X".

His draft card is No 1074, form 668, marked 2131 from Etowah Co., Alabama.

William married Alberta Hutchins and together they had one son, John Sanford Maddix who was born circa 1918 and died March 16, 1970 at the age of 52.
