Charley was born in Alcalde before the formation of Coalinga. In June 1908, he became involved in the kidnapping of a wealthy Coalinga-area sheep and cattle rancher's daughter, Edna Domengine. The plan was hatched by his cousin and new step-father, Tony Loveall. The girl was rescued with no ransom being paid. Because Charley's part in the scheme was minimal and the fact that he testified against the other two, he was given probation. Loveall and Cleve Rogers were sent to San Quentin where Loveall died after serving two years.

In subsequent years, Charley kept a low profile and worked as a truck driver and heavy equipment operator. He died in a Fresno convalescent home after a long illness.

Charley is buried in an unmarked grave within one hundred feet of the Sheriff's grave who arrested him sixty years before in the rolling hills of Coalinga.
