In 1941, Ray married Mary Banks of Milford, Utah and together they had four children, Mary Lynn, Bryan Ray, Dennis Gale, and Ellen Jean. Ray served 31 years in the U.S. Navy, rising to the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 4 as a cryptologist in Naval Intelligence. The Navy stationed Ray and his family in Washington D.C., Japan, and Germany.

He converted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held many church positions over the years. After retiring from the Navy, Ray returned to school and spent many years as a TV repairman. Ray loved to drive.
