Found in The State 15 January 1950: Mrs. James Henry Fowles, 69, widow of James Henry Fowles, former clerk of the senate of South Carolina, died at 6:30 last night at the home of her daughter, Mrs. L. O. Thomas, 323 Sims avenue, following a long illness. Mrs. Fowles, the former Sophie Stuart Clarkson, daughter of Alexander Garden Clarkson and Emily Hayward Clarkson of Wateree, was born January 21, 1880, at "The Raft," home of the Clarkson family, one of the earliest settlers of Richland county. She attended Converse college and on April 17, 1907 she was married to James Henry Fowles of Columbia. Mr. Fowles died October 11 of last year. She was a life-long member of the Trinity Episcopal church of Columbia and the Zion Episcopal church of Easter. During the first World War she served as an organizer of the Daughters of the Holy Cross for the church. Her survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Amelia Clarkson Babcock of Vienna, Va., and Mrs. Emily Clarkson Ball of Roanoke, Va.; four brothers, N. Heyward Clarkson of Columbia and Alexander Garden Clarkson, James S. H. Clarkson and Robert B. Clarkson, all of Camden; one son, James Henry Fowles of Columbia; three daughters, Mrs. Ernest W. Franck of Stamford, Conn., Mrs. Thomas J. Moody of Louisville, Ky., and Mrs. Lovick O. Thomas of Columbia; ten grandchildren also survive. Funeral services will be conducted from the Trinity Episcopal church at 4:30 this afternoon, with the Rev. George Alexander and the Rev. A. G. Bramwell Bennett officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood cemetery.
