PFC John Edward Spurr landed on Omaha Beach in Normandy, France, on June 7, 1944 as part of the Allied invasion of Europe during World War II. He served with the US Army's 29th Division, 175th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Battalion, Company I. On the morning of June 12, 1944, John was leading a patrol south of the French village of Moon-sur-Elle when a German machine gun opened up on his squad. He suffered a serious wound in the shoulder and was captured along with Private Herbert N. Colcord. John died on June 29, 1944, at a German hospital in Rennes, France.
