Mrs. Katharine Jurgens, a pioneer citizen of Oak Township, answered the call of the death angel on Thursday, June 29, after an illness of several weeks from ailments incident to old age.
The funeral services were held at the Lutheran church in Mineola on Saturday, conducted by Rev. O. Sitzler.
The large concourse of neighbors and friends present at the services bespoke of the high esteem in which the
deceased was held.
The death of Mrs. Jurgens marks the passing of the last member of the well known Schoening family who were early settlers of Oak township, coming from Germany. Mrs. Jurgens was Miss Katrina Schoening, and was born in Gartendorf, Holstein, Germany. She came to America in 1862
and moved at once to Mills County. Her husband, Ludwig Jurgens, died about twenty-three years ago. Mrs. Jurgens has lived on the farm purchased by her husband from the government, all the years since 1862. Twelve children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Jurgens, six of whom survive their mother. A son, Adolph Jurgens, died previous to his father. The living children are Mrs. Henry Deitchler, Mrs. Julius Miller, Mrs. Charles Miller, Mrs. Gustaf Miller,
Mrs. Growell, and a son, Louis, who occupies the home place. All of the children reside in the vicinity of Mineola except Mrs. Growell. Mrs. Jurgens had reached the ripe age of 83 years, 8 months and 20 days. She was a woman beloved by everyone, and fulfilled the scriptural
saying, "She looketh well to the care of the household; and her children rise up and call her blessed."
