Deloraine Corey, was from an old New England family with roots going back to the Mayflower. He wrote the definitive history of Malden, was President of the Malden Historical Society and the Malden Public Library, was very active in the Baptist church and supported the YMCA after his son Arthur's death. In one obituary he was called the First Citizen of Malden. He was born in what is now Everett in 1836. Deloraine married Isabella Holden in 1865. Professionally, Deloraine started working as a bookkeeper in Boston, eventually becoming partner in a hardware business that was lost in the great Boston fire of 1872. Later he became treasurer for an oil business that was folded into Standard Oil. He retired in 1898, but remained very active until the end of his life.
