David Foster Stevenson was a son of Miles Stevenson and his first wife, Sarah Deborah Irwin. It is believed that he was named in honor of the Reverend David Foster, a minister of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church of Macon Co., IL.

David remained a bachelor and lived with his brother, James M. Stevenson for many years. After his brother died, David lived in Salisbury, IL where he conducted a general merchandise business.

David Foster Stevenson stepped on a rusty nail on the farm of his neice, Sarah Deborah Irwin Brown. He died as the result of the gangrene that followed. His death certificate indicates that he was buried in Salisbury, IL; however, cemetery inscriptions of Salisbury Cemetery do not list his name. It is presumed that he lies in an unmarked grave.
