Johann Heinrich Adam Martin Vogel (Henry) and his wife Carolina Christiana Antionette Riedel gave birth to George Christian Vogel on 29 Apr 1854 in Hof, Bavaria. A little over a week later on May 7th, George was christened at St. Michaeliskirche, an Evangelical Lutheran church in Hof where his father and grandparents had also been christened. George's godfather, and namesake, was his uncle Georg Christian Vogel. [FAG Memorial # 83822560]

George would not know Hof as his parents and his uncle Georg and their family left Hof in the summer of 1855. He arrived in New York City on 30 Jul 1855 and from there the families traveled to the Dubuque, Iowa area where they settled just outside Sherrill. His father and uncle helped start St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Sherrill, Iowa where George was confirmed on Quasimodo Sunday 19 Apr 1868 at age 13.

In 1875 George moved to Madison where he met his future wife, Julia Joachim. They had 11 children together. George was a carpenter in Madison and the company he founded was later incorporated by his two sons into Vogel Brothers Construction Company, which still operates in Madison to this day.
