Edward "Ned" Hance Hance IV, 87, of Aiken, died Saturday, March 3, 2012, at the Georgia Health Sciences Medical Center, Augusta, GA.

Born September 30, 1924, in Philadelphia, PA, to Cmdr. Edward H. Hance III and Elizabeth R. Hance. He graduated from the Hill School, Pottstown, PA, in 1943. He went on to the University of South Carolina where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering. After graduation, Mr. Hance served in World War II with the United States Navy. After three years, he joined the Naval Reserve and served 20 years as an Intelligence Officer.

In 1955, Mr. Hance received a J.D. from the George Washington University Law School. While attending law school, Mr. Hance served on the Congressional staff of the late U.S. Senator Harry Floyd Byrd of Virginia. Upon graduation, he accepted a Federal position as an attorney with the Internal Revenue Service, New York, NY. In this role, he served as a trial attorney with the U.S. Tax Court involved with high profile, landmark tax fraud cases. Upon his retirement from Federal service, Mr. Hance had risen to the top of the Senior Executive Service as the IRS's Chief Counsel for the State of New Jersey Division of Taxation. Mr. Hance was a long-standing member of the New Jersey State Bar Association.

Mr. Hance served on the Franklin Township Zoning Board of Adjustment, Somerset, NJ, for several years. He was a member of the St. Matthias Catholic Church and supported various youth sports activities and charitable organizations. He enjoyed travel, playing golf, and watching sports.

He is survived by his wife, Helen Dodson Hance of Washington, D.C.; a son, Colonel Edward H. Hance V (Valerie) of Tampa, FL; a daughter, Helene H. Taylor (Bill) of Aiken; six grandchildren, including Courtney Hance McClary of Kingstree, SC; Jennifer Hance Krieger of Great Falls, VA; Lindsay Hance of Tampa, FL; Edward H. Hance VI of Tampa, FL; Cody Taylor of Charleston, SC; and Colleen Taylor of Livonia, MI. Mr. Hance has four great grandchildren.

The Hance family will receive visitors at George Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 211 Park Avenue, SW, Aiken, SC on Monday, March 12, 2012, 6-8pm, with a Vigil Service taking place at 6:30. A Requiem Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, March 13, 2012, at 11am at St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church, 219 York St., SE, Aiken.

Interment at the Arlington National Cemetery will follow at a later date.
