Melvin Lee Johnson, 22, of Live Oak, was being held in Yuba county jail today on $5,000 bail, pending investigation of manslaughter charges by the California Highway Patrol in the death of Earl L. Clemens, 32, of 969 Sierra St., Yuba City.

Clemens was killed early Sunday morning when the 1935 sedan in which the two men were riding overturned just after coming off the D Street bridge, heading toward Roseville, on Highway 99E, the patrol reported.

Johnson, who is listed by police as a construction worker for the Pacific Gas & Electric Co, suffered minor cuts and bruises. He was treated in Yuba County hospital and then taken to his Live Oak home, where he was taken into custody yesterday by California Highway Patrolman Bill Force.

The investigation is being conducted by CHP Captain Tal Norwood, who was at the scene of the accident.

Clemens was a veteran of World War II and is survived by his wife Marcella Susan Clemens, a Belgian war bride; one sister, Mrs. Gordon Stromer, and his mother, Mrs. Violet Carlile.
