Known as Lena, she was born to a German mother and Swedish father in Buffalo, NY. When she was about 5, her family moved to the booming city of Chicago, IL and settled into the Andersonville neighborhood, home to many Swedish immigrants.
She learned to sew at an early age and was working in a sweatshop by the age of 8.
She married John Eugene Russell in the mid-1880's and they raised three daughters. After the death of her eldest daughter in 1924 she lovingly cared for her 2 grandaughters for several years until they could rejoin their father and brother.
In 1939 she fell in the bathroom, breaking her her femur. She died several weeks later from pneumonia.
