Jefferson served as Jackson County Treasurer from January 1, 1835 to June 1, 1836. He was also elected to the county commissioners court in 1845-1847 and served again for a four year term in 1850-1854.

During the 1840 U.S. census, Jefferson Allen was recorded as living in Jackson County, Illinois.
In 1850, Jefferson was widowed and living in the Southern District of Jackson County, Illinois in household number 239, with his 2 year old daughter, Mary. He is living next door to his former in-laws, William and Sarah Ward.
When the 1855 Illinois State census was taken, Jefferson was still living in Jackson County, Illinois.
On the 1860 U.S. census, Jefferson and his wife, Mary Emaline, are living in Jackson County, Illinois with his daughter, Mary, who is 12 years old. Jefferson states that he was born in Kentucky, however on his son's death certificate, it is noted that he was born in Christian County, Illinois. I wonder if the person who filled out the death certificate for Beverly got Christian County, Kentucky confused with Christian County, Illinois. His wife, Mary Emaline reports that she was born in Pennsylvania. Also living in the household are, Martin Tyner, age 20, and William Buckles, age 26. Both were born in Illinois.
