Vernon "Pop" Hawkins, 90, Sarasota and formerly of Palmetto, died March 16, 2003. He was born Jan. 29, 1913, in Pelham, Ga, and came to Sarasota in 1937 from Palmetto. He retired in 1970 as the owner/operator of the Copy Center in Sarasota and was a member of Company I, 124th Infantry, National Guard of Palmetto. He was a member of Crystal Cathedral, Garden Grove, Calif.

Survivors include his wife of 71 years, Helen J.; a daughter, Derry L. O'Brien of Marietta, Ga; sons Vernon R. Jr. of Winter Haven and John C. of Fort Myers; a sister, Carolyn Lamphere of St. Petersburg; a brother, Ralph W. of St. Petersburg; 10 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 6-8pm Wednesday at Toale Brothers Funeral Home, Colonial Chapel. A service will be at 2pm Thursday at the chapel. Memorial donations may be made to American Cancer Society, 1750 17th St., Suite A, Sarasota, FL. Published in Herald Tribune on Mar. 18, 2003.
