Newton Hill Hester
Hester, Newton enlisted in Company G, 4th Missouri Cavalry, on March 24, 1862, at St. Joseph, Missouri. He was promoted to fourth sergeant on April 16, 1862 and to first lieutenant on December 19, 1862. Hester and the 4th Missouri Cavalry saw action at the 1862 Battle of Pea Ridge, and the 1864 battles of Brice's Cross Roads, Little Blue, and Mine Creek. Hester was mustered out of the service on April 15, 1865; he died on July 21, 1919, at Shelbina, Missouri.

AGED MAN DIES
Newton Hill Hester passed away at his home in this city Monday, after an illness of several months. Funeral services were held at the residence at 10 o'clock yesterday morning, conducted by the Rev. A. B. Culbertson. Deceased was born in Virginia in 1834, was reared in Indiana and, in later years, lived at Fitzgerald, Ga. He was a veteran of the Civil war and a man of influence in his home community. He came to Shelbina last January and married Mrs. Matilda Noble, who faithfully cared for him during his last illness. A daughter-in-law, Mrs. Barbara Maddocks of St. Louis, attended the funeral.
