Charles M. Patterson was the step-brother of Samuel A. McNeil. Both men were in Company F of the 31st Ohio Volunteer Infantry. In a letter from Samuel McNeil to his father on February 28, 1863, Samuel forewarns his father that Charles (Patterson) is dangerously ill and may be a 'corpse' by the time the letter reaches its destination. McNeil suggests that his father decide whether to come to Murfreesboro, Tennessee after Charles, where both men were stationed. He passed away on March 4, 1863 at the age of 16 years old. His body was safely moved back to Richwood and buried at the East York Cemetery.
