THE DEATH OF GRANDMA CARITHERS.
Our community has been called to mourn the loss of another of our aged and beloved citizens in the death of Grand-ma Carithers. After a short illness she departed his life on last Saturday morning. She was a "mother in Israel" and a dear, thoughtful, faithful mother in her home and the community. Her name was Martha Wilson Carithers. She was the daughter of Asa and Mary Ann Lewis. Born in Sterling, N. Y., Aug. 26, 1829, and died in Winchester, Kansas, April 27, 1907. Age 77 years, 8 months and 1 day. In 1837 she came with her parents to Indiana, and settled at Cedar Lake where she remained till 1870 when she came to Kansas. From that time till her death she has lived in this community. In 1850 she was married to Samuel Carithers. To this union six children were born: one son and five daughters. They are all living and were all present but one. One daughter was prevented from being present by sickness in her family. In early life she united with the Reformed Presbyterian church. She was a charter member of the United Presbyterian church in this place, and was an earnest, faithful member of the church, and servant of her Lord and Master till her death. She was faithful unto death and has entered into the promised reward. "Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord." "They enter into rest and their works do follow them."
The funeral services were held in the house on Monday at 10:30 a.m., conducted by her pastor, Rev. W. E. Dunlap, assisted by Rev. Poolton of the M. E. church.
Beautiful floral offerings were made and all that could be done was gladly done for her by her children and grandchildren and many friends.
The body was taken back to the old home for interment, accompanied by her son, Asa, and her daughter, Mrs. Wilkinson.
