Mary was an editor of the Michigan Catholic, a publication of the Archdiocese of Detroit. She retired in 1988. She lived the last few years of her life at Lourdes Nursing Home. When she died, her daughter, Maureen Van tiem, gave her an Irish send-off: She asked a Lourdes staffer to get a bottle of beer and toasted her mother: "God love you, Mom. Have the happiest of birthdays. Now have a cold one with Dad and Denny." Dennis, one of her 7 children, died in a horseback riding accident in 1969. Her husband, Joe, died in 1992.
