By the time Johanna Butschke got to her 13-year-old nephew, it was too late.
"Me and him were really close," Johanna Butschke told TODAY'S TMJ4 reporter Tom Murray. "He was a great kid, super sweet, very talented."
Jacob's parents were away from their town of Oconomowoc home for just a short time Sunday. He wanted to rest after feeling ill for a few days, family members said. When Jacob's mom called to check in, she got a busy signal and asked Aunt Johanna to check on the teenager.
"It only took me a few minutes to get to the house," Johanna said. "The minute I got in there, I looked at him, called 9-1-1, right away the operator was telling me how to do the CPR."
The night before he died, Jacob felt well enough to perform his school's musical 'Annie, Jr.'. He was a talented young actor and singer. Jacob also served on student council at Oconomowoc Nature Hill Intermediate School.
"Jacob was an extremely active and involved kid," principal Mike O'Connor said. "He was somebody everybody knew. He's going to be missed."
The Waukesha County Medical Examiner said Jacob likely died from a "respiratory infection combined with an underlying cardiac condition." The physician who performed the autopsy said Jacob did not have meningitis.
