James William "Curly" Derrick, 95, of Carlsbad, passed away Thursday, April 22, at his home.
Derrick was born Oct. 28, 1908, in Lake Arthur to Tom and America Derrick. He attended Lake Arthur High School where he and three of his brothers dominated area basketball. Derrick married Anna Mary Lattion May 31, 1942. They shared a lifelong endeavor of cattle ranching.
They ranched east of Hagerman until 1951 when they purchased a ranch near Mayhill, where they spent the next 44 years laboring side by side.
Derrick proclaimed that the most significant event of his life occurred in 1976 when he submitted his life to God and became obedient to Christ through baptism. He belonged to the Church of Christ in Mayhill, Artesia and Carlsbad.
Derrick will lie in state Friday, April 22, from 12-6 p.m. at Denton-Funchess Funeral Home in Carlsbad and Saturday, April 24, from 10 a.m. until noon at Hermosa Drive Church of Christ, 1302 West Hermosa Drive in Artesia.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 24, at 2 p.m. at Hermosa Drive Church of Christ in Artesia with Roby Zumwalt and Ray Young officiating.
Interment will follow at Hagerman Cemetary in Hagerman.
Pall bearers will be Brent Derrick, Ryan Derrick, Derrick Merchant, Trey Merchant, Jordan Merchant, Chad Merchant, Matt Clark and Joel Stewart.
