William was living with his parents in Binghamton, when he enlisted in the Marines 17 February 1965, at a recruiting office in Albany. He graduated 6 May 1965 from Parris Island Boot Camp with Platoon 115, Bravo Company.
Upon arriving in Vietnam, William was assigned to Mike Company, 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division. William was with a night ambush that was engaged by hostile forces 11 kilometers north northwest of Dien Ban. William died as a result of multiple fragmentation wounds to both sides of the head from a hostile explosive device.
Tour of duty known.
Survived by his parents, Kenneth E and Adda C Gillette, and his older sister; Marion L of 131 East Fredrick Street, Binghamton, New York.
