He enlisted in the New York State National Guard in 1874 devoting much of his time to service as an officer of Company H, Seventh Regiment; beginning as a private, gradually moving up the ranks: corporal (1881); sergeant (1882); Lieutenant (1884); captain (1888), and finally as major (1901). He was honorably discharged from duty in 1909.
On January 19, 1882, Charles married his college sweetheart, Ella Voorhis. Together they had the following children; Leigh Kent, 1883-1969, Kenneth, 1886-1954, Nathalie (Dyer), 1887-1963. After the death of his beloved Ella (1889), he married Josephine Batjer Pond in 1907.
After his retirement in 1909 from the military, Charles was active in the 7th regiment veterans organization and as the presidencies of the National Guard Association (1906) and National Security League (1916), the Holland Society and as president and trustee of the Alumni Association of City College of New York.
The family resided at "Howcroft" Farm in Maywood, New Jersey and after his death, his son Leigh Kent, and his family became its residents.
