Janellner "Jane" Mahoney Shumate, 83, of Sophia, passed away Monday, May 27, 2002, at a Fayette County care facility. Born March 9, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Clinton Mahoney and Octavia Justice Mahoney Hamed. Mrs. Shumate was a homemaker and a retired nurse's aide from Pinecrest Hospital. She was preceded in death by her husband, James C. Shumate Jr.; and her stepfather, George Hamed. Survivors include four sons, Melvyn Shumate of Sophia, James Shumate and wife, Greta, of Akron, Ohio, Joel Shumate and wife, Thelma, of Shady Spring and Barry Shumate and wife, Terry, of Las Vegas, Nev.; a daughter, Shelia Shumate of Sedona, Ariz.; a sister, Kathleen Stevens of Marion, Va.; 20 grand-children; and 20 great-grandchildren. Service will be 1 p.m. Friday at Williams-Blue Ridge Funeral Home Chapel, So-phia, with the Rev. Jim Mundy officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley. Friends may call one hour before service Friday at the funeral home. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. Arrangements by Williams-Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Sophia.
