Mrs. Vera H. Pigue, widow of the late W. W. Pigue, Sr., and a longtime resident of Martin, died Tuesday at the Volunteer General Hospital. She had been in ill health since last March 5 when she broke her hip. Her children were at her bedside at her death.
Mrs. Pigue was born in Kewanna, Indiana, the daughter of the late A. H. Hudkins. The family settled in Martin in 1898, making their home at 217 Sterling Street, and where Mrs. Pique still lived at the time of her death. Mr. Hudkins operated a grocery store in Martin for a number of years. Both her parents died in 1941.
She married W. W. Pigue Sr. in 1903. After their marriage , they left Martin as Mr. Pigue's newspaper and writing career took him to various towns and cities in Tennessee and Texas and to St. Louis and Pittsburgh. They returned to Martin in 1937 after Mr. Pigue retired. He died in Martin in 1938.
Mrs. Pigue was an accomplished pianist and was active in the Philharmonic Music Club and other musical circles. She was also in school organizations and served as president of a Parent-Teacher Association in Houston, Texas. She was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ.
She leaves three sons, W. W Pigue Jr. of Los Angeles, Col. Paul E. Pigue, I. S. Army, Dayton, Ohio, and James E. Pigue of Madison; two daughters , Mrs. Norman Mansfield of Dallas, Texas, and Mrs. Frank E. Fisher of Torrence, California and three brothers, Phon Hudkins of Detroit, Edgar Hudkins of Louisville, and Alonzo Hudkins of Monroe, Louisiana.
Services were held Wednesday at the Doug Murphy Chapel with Bro. Billy Newby of Christ Church officiating. Burial was in East Side Cemetery in the family plot at the side of her husband and parents with Doug Murphy Funeral Home incharge.
