Husband of Dr. Muriel (Mallin) Berman. After serving in the Marine Corps in the South Pacific during World War II he returned to the family truck leasing business. Under his direction, Berman Leasing became the first truck leasing company to be listed on the New York Stock Exchange. Eventually he expanded the company to include trucking terminal real estate and later he purchased Hess's Department Store in Allentown, Pennsylvania. He turned the historic downtown store into a 40 store chain before selling it to a competing department store chain. He was the founder of Public Television in Pennsylvania. He and his wife were avid art collectors. He was once listed as one of the top 100 art collectors in the United States and was one of the biggest collectors of outdoor sculptures in the world. Many of his collection were donated to museums, colleges and universities, and civic organizations. His donated sculptures can be seen on the campuses of the University of Pennsylvania, Temple University, the University of Notre Dame, Rutgers University and Hebrew University in Jerusalem. He was also the President and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Philadelphia Museum of Art from 1989 to 1997.
