Martha Ann Edwards was born to Hillard Henry Edwards and Rachel Lucretia Curneal on 9 June 1860 in Dixon, Webster County, Kentucky. The family lived in Kentucky for a time, before moving to Evansville, Vanderburgh, Indiana. Martha spent her childhood in Indiana. In 1879, her family moved to College City, Colusa County, California. It was in Colusa County where Martha married her first husband Elias E. Weaver.

Elias Weaver and Martha were married on 12 April 1879 in Colusa County, California. Elias and Martha moved to Santa Rosa, Sonoma County, California. It is in Santa Rosa where their first child was born. Two years later they moved to Woodland, Yolo County, California, more than likely to be closer to Elias' mother Elizabeth (Toney) Weaver High. It is in Woodland where the rest of their children were born.

Martha and Elias spent the rest of their married years raising their four children, before divorcing in 1893. According to a newspaper article, Martha went to the
Superior Court and filed a divorce from her husband Elias Weaver on 1 December 1893. The newspaper article states, "No sooner was the decree for a divorce granted than Thomas J. Bradford, who was an interested spectator of the proceedings, applied for a license for himself and Mrs. Weaver to be married." The newspaper article goes on to state that Tom Bradford requested for Judge Fisher to marry them that same day. So Mattie married Thomas James Bradford on 1 December 1893 in Fresno County, California. Mattie took her two daughters Elizabeth (also known as Libby) and Pearl Weaver to live with her and Tom Bradford. Her two oldest sons stayed with their father Elias Weaver in Woodland, Yolo, California.

A month and a half after her marriage to Tom Bradford, Mattie gave birth to Thomas James Bradford, Jr. Three more boys were born to that union. While married to Tom Bradford, Mattie helped with the Bradford Store and hotel, where travelers and teamsters would stop for the night. Mattie and her daughters would feed the many travelers that stopped for the night, and Tom would take care of the store.

Mattie's marriage with Tom Bradford lasted only sixteen years. The two divorced and both married other spouses. Mattie married her third husband Benjamin B. Bryan on 24 December 1908 in Fresno County, California. She and Benjamin never had any children together and the marriage lasted for almost nine years. Mattie divorced Mr. Bryan on 3 February 1916, according to a newspaper article found in the Woodland Daily Democrat. On 27 October 1917 Martha married her fourth husband John Louis Congrave in Yolo County, California. She was 57-years old at the time of her marriage, and John was 45 years old. John died almost 5 years before Martha. Martha died on 23 June 1949 in Woodland, Yolo, California.
