Blanche M. Shumate, 77, of Superior, formerly of Morgan Park, died Saturday, Aug. 10, 1996, in Beverly Health and Rehabilitation Center in Superior.

She was born in Superior, where she graduated from high school. She was a graduate of Superior Teacher's College and received her master's degree from the University of Minnesota-Duluth. She married Wayne Avery Shumate in April 1943, in Miami. She moved to Duluth in 1953 from Stoughton, Wis. She taught elementary school in Duluth for 23 years at Lincoln, Riverside, Morgan Park and Stowe schools. She was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church in Duluth and was a member of its choir, library board, Rachel Circle and the Zion Lutheran Church Women. She also was a member of Cursillo, the Duluth Retired Teachers Association, Alpha Kappa, Nordmanns-Forbundet and worked with the Kid's Closet.

Her husband, Wayne Avery, died in 1967.

She is survived by two daughters, Beth Avery Olson of Superior and Ann Wayne Shumate of Minneapolis; two sisters, Alice Barnhart of Elyria, Ohio, and Carole Hawk of Beaver Creek, Ohio; and a brother, Luther Larsen of Tracy, Calif.

Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Monday in Williams-Lobermeier Funeral Home. It will continue at 12 until the 1 p.m. service Tuesday in Zion Lutheran Church, Duluth. Burial will be in Park Hill Cemetery, Duluth.
