NORTH TAZEWELL, Va. - Don Eugene Bowman, 71, of North Tazewell, died Wednesday, April 21, 2004 at his home.

Born May 22, 1932 at Tip Top, Va., he was a son of Beulah Lee Johnson Bowman of Hollywood, Fla. and the late Stewart [Stuart] Bowman.

He was a graduate of Saint Albans High School in Charleston. He served in the U.S. Air Force and provided security for Air Force One under President Eisenhower, President Kennedy, and President Johnson. He was in the Presidential Honor Guard and later retired from the U.S. Air Force. Mr. Bowman was an honorary member of the Harry S. Truman Library and was personally appointed by President Harry Truman. He worked at Pyott Boone in Tazewell, Va. from 1972-1976 and at Reco from 1976-1987.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Jessica Lynn Ratliff and two brothers, Preston Bowman and Doug Bowman.

Survivors in addition to his mother include his wife, Peggy Bowman; one son, Donald Robert Bowman and wife, Carma of Roanoke, Va.; two daughters, Sharon Jean Ratliff and husband, John W. Ratliff Jr. of Thompson Valley, Va. and Diana Lynn Brocker and husband, Donald W. Brocker of Fayetteville, N.C.; two sisters, Delores Taylor of Charleston and Carolyn Kelly of Hollywood, Fla.; stepdaughter, Vickie Goodrich and husband, Tom of Virginia Beach, Va.; two grandsons, Donald Erick and David Brocker; great granddaughters, Hailie Ratliff and Kaylyn Brocker; step grandchildren, Farley and Brandon Goodrich.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Peery & St.Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell, Va. with the Rev. Barry Absher and the Rev. Kenny Fields officiating. Entombment will follow at Grandview Memory Gardens Mausoleum in Bluefield, Va. Pallbearers will be Johnny Ratliff, Jack Pyott, Frank Pyott, Jim Doak, Larry Laxton, and Tom Alley.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7-9 p.m.
