Jerry Abbott, 67, of Calabash, N.C., departed this life Sunday, March 11, 2012, at the VA Medical Center in Durham, N.C.

Born July 9, 1944, in Logan, he was a son of the late Woodrow and Delia Mayhone Abbott. Also preceding him in death were his grandparents, William and Rosa Mullins, Noah Mayhone and Beverly Aleshire Abbott.

Jerry enjoyed sports, golfing and was an avid Cleveland Browns, New York Yankees and Marshall Thundering Herd football fan. He enjoyed celebrating life with his family and friends especially his grandsons, Christopher and Marshall.

Jerry was very active in his early years coaching youth sports in the Chapmanville area. He was very proud of his sons achieving success in athletics on the youth, high school and collegiate levels. Jerry loved to play golf and was himself a 1962 State High School golf champion.

Through all his challenges in later years with his health, his greatest gift was accepting God into his heart and life, smiling everyday when he beat Christopher and Dylan on the golf course. Jerry was a member of the Mt. Calvary Baptist Church in South Carolina. He devoted his life to his family with great love and compassion, and to his extended family, Carl and Marie, with love. The journey has been far, the light has been set, peace is at hand and love to all.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Diana Abbott of Calabash; one daughter, Stephanie Hale of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; four sons, Jerry Abbott Jr. of Maryland, Greg "Bones" (Dana) Abbott of Sunset Beach, S.C., Michael "Weaser" (Sarah) Abbott of Noblesville, Ind., and Gregory "Grover" (Angie) Spears of Lake; two sisters, Linda (Fred) Adams and Joyce Strunk, both of Chapmanville; three brothers, Billy (Pat) Abbott of Sissonville, and John (Janet) Abbott and Glen Abbott, both of Chapmanville; five grandchildren, Christopher and Marshall, both of Sunset Beach, Natilie of Charlotte, N.C., and Brandon and Corey, both of Lake; two great-grandchildren, Easton and Brody; his best friends, Carl and Marie Bledsoe, Dwight "Mac" Estep, Jim Conley, David "Doc" Hale and Gary Bledsoe.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 16, at Chapmanville Church of God with Rev. Orville Ellis Jr., Rev. James Smith and Rev. Carl Bledsoe officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery at Pecks Mill.

Pallbearers will be Keith Abbott, Chris Alford, Bobby Basadre, Chris "Goose" Dingess, Claude Rice, Tim Bledsoe, David Dean and Steve Abbott.
