Em was born at the Koskela family homestead near Roseberry, Long Valley, Idaho. He was the third eldest child of 14 children born to pioneer Finnish immigrants Gust and Hanna (Hautamaki) Koskela of Long Valley. He married May Grace Shearer on December 30, 1932. They lived at Lake Fork where they ranched for awhile, then Em went to work for the railroad. They lived in several western communities, includng Bend, Oregon, before retiring in 1972, when they moved to Nampa. He lived at Nampa until the death of his wife in Dec 1994. He then moved to Grangeville to be near to his daughter Joanie and family. He died at St. Joseph's Medical center in Lewiston of causes related to age. He was 93. He was an outdoorsman and golfer, and a champion skier in his youth in the mountains around McCall where he grew up. He is survived by son Raymond of South Carolina, daughters Joanie and Patricia and 9 of his 13 brothers and sisters; also 11 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. A graveside service was held March 12 at Kohlerlawn Cemetery.
