Andy was born at his family homestead near Roseberry (Long Valley), Idaho. He was the 4th child of 14 born to Finnish immigrants Gustaf and Hanna (Hautamaki) Koskela of Long Valley. At a young age of about 15, he moved to Longview, Washington where he worked and finished school. He worked for several years in Longview as a sawmill employee and salmon fisherman. He married Dora Groesbeck on June 21, 1942 at Murphy, Idaho and they moved to Nampa. He entered the US Army on July 28, 1942 and served during WWII in Bismark Archipelago, New Guinea, and the southern Philippines as a ship's carpenter. During his time in the service, he received several honors including the Philippine Liberation Medal, Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, Victory Medal, Bronze Service Arrowhead, and the Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged Dec 31, 1945 and returned to Nampa. There he worked as a fine cabinetry carpenter for several companies. Dora died Aug 28, 1979. He was a member of the Lutheran Church. Funeral services will be held Jan 6. Burial will be at Kohlerlawn Cemetery, with military rites by American Legion Joseph H. Murray Post #18 of Nampa. He is survived by six brothers, five sisters and numerous nieces and nephews. Two brothers, August and Martie, died earlier.
