Martin was the son of Edward O. Estenson and Annie Syverson Estenson. He was staying for the summer, at his Uncle Gilbert's farm, near Hendrum, in Hegne Township. He died from a ruptured appendix, at Ada, MN., 16 July, 1914, at the age of 15. Funeral services for him were held at Uncle Gilbert's home, and at the Concordia Church, 20 July, 1914.

Martin had two full brothers: Ernest Estenson, 23 Jan 1901 - 12 Apr 1979 (Ruth Knutson, 1907 - 1926, and Genevieve M. Kampschroer, 14 Sep., 1910 - 15 Nov 1991), and Albert "Bert" Estenson, 26 Jan., 1903 - 21 Mar., 1971 (Mable G. Norstrom, 10 July, 1911 - 1 Aug, 1998).

Martin had one half-sister: Myrtle Elnora Estenson, 27 Aug. 1907 - 17 May, 1908. She was the child of his father, Edward O. Estenson, and his second wife, Karine M. Huseby Estenson (ca 1882 - 27 Apr., 1908)
